The French press expressed skepticism today about the statement by Premier Khrushchev’s son-in-law, Alexei Adjubei, who said while on a visit here that the Soviet Union was ready to support “a peaceful solution to the Israeli problem, ” based on the Soviet Premier’s policy of peaceful co-existence with the West. Adjubei, who is editor of the official Soviet Government newspaper, Izvestia, said yesterday that the policy applied to the Middle East as well.
The influential evening daily, Le Monde, said that, “on one particular point. Izvestia’s editor will cause consternation among the Arab leaders: His statement that Khrushchev’s proposal for a peaceful settlement of all outstanding international and territorial issues applies also to the Arab- Jewish conflict. “
This, Le Monde declared, was contrary to the views expressed by President Nasser of Egypt and Premier Ben Bella of Algeria in their replies to the Soviet Premier’s letter on the peaceful coexistence policy, last January. “The two Arab leaders claimed that the Palestinian conflict is not a territorial one, but a capitalistic one in which force can be used, ” Le Monde said.
