The ceremonial affixing of a mezuzah and the cutting of a blue and white ribbon marked the opening here today of the $2,000,000 American-Israel Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair. The opening ceremonies also included a champagne luncheon attended by some 400 invited guests including Ambassador Michael S. Comay, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations; Consul General Katriel Katz; and Aryeh Manor, Israel’s Economic Minister to the United States.
Featured among the exhibits at the pavilion will be a Torah scroll once owned by the Russian Czars. The scroll, which was part of the collection in the Czars’ Asiatic Museum, is now part of a private collection of Prof. Abraham I. Katsh of New York University.
The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, meanwhile, announced the opening at the World’s Fair of an educational exhibit and kosher refreshment center under the sponsorship of the organization. The UOJCA food facility and exhibition, the only one under the auspices of a national congregational body, is located in the Hall of Education.
