Henry George’s ‘progress and Poverty’ Published in Hebrew in Israel

The Robert Schalkenbach Foundation announced here today publication in Israel of the first edition in the Hebrew language of Henry George’s philosophical classic, “Progress and Poverty,” first published in 1879. The translation was made in Israel under a grant from the Foundation which also made a supplementary grant to provide the book to 632 public and six university libraries in Israel. The edition has been published by Massadah, Ltd.

Announcement was made at a reception given by the Foundation at its New York headquarters. Mendel N. Fisher, secretary-consultant of the Jewish National Fund, who wrote the foreword to the Hebrew edition, pointed out the special significance of Henry George’s teachings to Israel, stressing that George’s ideals of land tenure were actually embodied in the Jewish National Fund program. Dr. Leo Jung said that Henry George’s principles derived from the Law of Moses. Robert Clancy, representing the Henry George School of Social Science, disclosed that the school plans to launch a free correspondence course of study in Israel based on the Hebrew edition.
