The week-long “go slow” strikes of postal workers and revenue officials continued today with widening disruption of trade and social life throughout Israel as officials of the strikers rejected appeals to end the crippling tactics.
Business mail was not distributed and millions of postal items were piled up at the main post office. Persons seeking to send cables were warned of delays of up to eight hours. Delivery of incoming cables also was delayed. Social invitations were being received days after the functions were held.
Attempts at the offices of the Histadrut, Israel’s Labor Federation, to end the slow-down in the post offices were fruitless and postal officials decided last night to continue their slowdown. A similar decision was adopted by revenue office officials who defied a Government warning to resume normal working activities because of the heavy losses in government revenue. Many transactions are now impossible because tax officials are not producing the necessary documents in time.
