Admission of North African Jews to Canada Sought by Jewish Group

The Jewish Immigrant Aid Society of Canada today reported that the first Canadian mission on immigration from North Africa to Canada examined about 350 applicants under the occupational criteria. Most of there applicants have now arrived in Canada. The second mission is now in North Africa, and is likely to remain there for about eight weeks.

The Jewish Immigrant Aid Society has submitted applications for a total of 270 families involving some 1,050 persons under the occupational criteria. Within this group there are some 237 families of 883 persons from Morocco and 32 families of 121 persons from Tunisia.

In addition, since the renewal of the movement from North Africa last year, some 350 applications were submitted under the close relatives scheme. About half have received approvals. Some 20 applications were submitted on behalf of teachers of French. It is estimated that about 30 immigrants from North Africa are now engaged as French teachers and specialists by the Protestant School Board of Montreal.
