The United States and Israel signed an agreement yesterday for the purchase by Israel of $2,100, 000 worth of frozen beef forequarters. The sale of 6, 600, 000 pounds of beef was made under the Food for Peach program.
Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman said the sale would be a step to bolster domestic cattle prices and to open new markets for cash sales of American beef. Nachum Shamir, economic minister of Israel, said the purchase would help Israel in its right to keep down meat prices for consumers. He also said that the agreement would not disrupt relations with Israel’s primary suppliers of meat in South America.
