The Rideau Club of Ottawa, an exclusive men’s club accused of barring Jewish members, announced today the unanimous election of seven new members, including four prominent Jewish residents of Ottawa.
In making the announcement, club officials said it had not been the club’s practice in the past nor would it in the future make public the results of membership elections. They said they had done so in this case because of publicity about the nomination of the four Jewish leaders. It was stressed that the initiative for their nominations did not come from them.
The four Jewish leaders are Louis Rasminsky, Governor of the Bank of Canada, Lawrence Freiman, department store head and former President of the Zionist Organization of Canada, Attorney Bernard Alexander, and David Golden, former Deputy Minister of Industry.
