Moscow Jews Jammed Synagogue on Yom Kippur; Young Cantor Officiated

Thousands of Moscow Jews jammed the Central Synagogue there yesterday as David Shternberg, a 36-year-old cantor from Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, in Central Asia, chanted the Yom Kippur services.

The worshipers pushed against each other in the aisles, balconies, rear foyer and other entrances of the synagogue while some who would not get in stood at windows as the voices of the cantor and male choir, amplified by microphones, made their way out of the sanctuary into the courtyard and the street,
