Prime Minister Harold Wilson said today he knew of “no discrimination” against Jewish membership applicants in the Hampstead Golf Club, of which he has been a member for eight years, although a number of Jews have told the press here that they have been denied admission into the club.
The controversy was launched publicly by Frank Davis, former Mayor of the London Borough of Finchley, who had written to Mr. Wilson, demanding that the Premier resign from the club. Mr. Wilson told the press today that “the only thing” to make him reconsider his membership in the club would be if he found “there was something in the rules” of the Hampstead Golf Club, barring Jews.
