A record goal of $6,066,000 was set here for the 1965 Jewish Welfare Fund Appeal, according to an announcement today by the newly elected board of trustees of the Jewish Community Federation, sponsor of the annual campaign. At the same time, it was announced that Samuel H. Miller, a trustee of the Federation, has been named general chairman of the 1965 drive.
The goal for 1965 was approved on the basis of recommendations by the budget committee, headed by Emil M. Elder, which pointed to increased needs to be met by the United Jewish Appeal, a major beneficiary of the campaign, as well as requests for larger allocations by the Federation’s local agencies, rising costs and more calls for service by the local agencies.
“The success of the 1965 campaign,” said Mr. Miller, “will hinge upon obtaining $466,000 in new or increased giving. Because of deaths, removals from the city and other changes, the 1964 achievement, in terms of the 1965 campaign, amounts realistically to $5,600,000. Accordingly, new money and increased gifts totaling $466,000 are essential to achieve the goal and meet the needs of the agencies.”
The 1965 campaign, which will help finance the needs of 122 local, national and over seas beneficiary agencies, will run officially from April 29 to May 30, Mr. Miller said. Mr. Miller is a vice-president of the Cleveland Hebrew Schools, has been secretary of the Bureau of Jewish Education, on the board of the Jewish Family Service Association, and is a trustee of the Park Synagogue.
