A new effort to counter pressures against the Soviet Government in regard to the situation of Soviet Jewry has become apparent in the Soviet press and other news and information media over the past two weeks, it was noted here today by experts.
There had been an increasing number of items mentioning Jews in important positions and the contributions of Jews to science, the arts and other spheres of Soviet life. The campaign is apparently intended to indicate there is no anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union as widely charged by critics in the West. It is Soviet press practice never to mention the nationality of people of achievement and distinction, and that policy is still adhered to in regard to members of other minority groups in the Soviet Union.
