Dayabhai Patel, leader of the Swatantra Group, charged today in the Indian Parliament upper house that the Government discouraged Members of Parliament from visiting countries like Israel and Formosa. He said that an official of the India High Commission in London advised him not to visit Israel.
The Deputy Minister for External Affairs denied such a policy existed but he added that India missions did advise visitors “in the context of conditions then prevailing” and that it was up to the deputy to accept or reject such advice. During the debate, Deputy Patel also criticized the Government policy of withholding diplomatic recognition from “friendly countries” like Israel and Formosa.
