A bill introduced in West Germany’s Parliament yesterday would extend for 10 years the effective date of the statute of limitations on prosecutions of Nazi war criminals for murder.
The bill was presented by Ernt Benda of Berlin, a member of Chancellor Ludwig Erhard’s Christian Democratic party. There is widespread opposition in the party to extending the statute beyond its present May 8 deadline for initiating new prosecutions of such war criminal.
Representatives of Czechoslovakian legal authorities will come to West Germany this month to hand over documents on Nazi crimes to the Central Office for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes in Ludwigsburg. Erwin Schuele, head of the office, citeo the trial plans as an example of the “positive way” that Czechoslovakia and Poland had responded to the appeal of the West German Government for new evidence against Nazi war criminals.
