Organizations of Conservative and Reform Jewry in the United States requested the New York State Legislature today to adopt legislation abolishing capital punishment in this state. In separate interventions, the abolition of capital punishment was advocated not only for New York State but also in all states where criminals convicted of major crimes are still subject to execution.
The Conservative movement, through its Rabbinical Assembly, wrote letters on the issue to Governor Rockefeller and to all members of this state’s legislatures, Miss June Evans, representing the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism, gave testi-mony on the issue before the legislature’s Joint Committee on Codes. Both organizations cited resolutions adopted by their bodies several years ago, opposing capital punishment.
