Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Estelle and Eugene Ferkauf comprehensive secondary school were held today at Or Yehuda, a town for new immigrants.
Construction of the school was made possible by a gift from Mr. Ferkauf, New York mercantile leader, of $600,000 to the Israel Education Fund. The Fund is a program of the United Jewish Appeal to help provide secondary education for children, particularly in the development towns of Israel.
The school, which will have an enrollment of 700 children, will help provide training for jobs in industrial plants and shops. It will also provide academic training for children planning to get a college education. Mr. Ferkauf is chairman of the executive committee of E.J. Korvette, Inc.
Among those attending the ceremony were Zalman Aranne, Israel’s Education Minister; Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir; directors of the Education Ministry and the Jewish Agency; and members of the Ferkauf family. Joseph Meyerhoff, of Baltimore, chairman of the Fund’s advisory board, and former UJA general chairman, also attended, as did Mayor Ben Porat.
