The New York press unanimously praised President Habib Bourguiba, of Tunisia, this weekend, for proposing peace negotiations between the Arab states and Israel.
Referring to his statements on the issue as “the first clear voice of sanity from the Arab side,” The Times, Herald-Tribune and Post also expressed disappointment in their editorials at the violent anti-Bourguiba reactions in the Arab press where he was accused, among other things, of “treason” to the Arab cause. The courage of Mr. Bourguiba’s move is exceeded only by its statesmanship, though it would be a mistake to expect any results in the near future from the seed of wisdom that President Bourguiba has new publicly planted,” the Times said. The Herald-Tribune and the New York Post wrote in a similar vein.
