3,113 Jews from 43 Countries Immigrated to Canada Last Year

A total of 3,113 Jews from 43 countries entered Canada as immigrants in 1954, it was reported here yesterday at the annual meeting of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services of Canada. Dr. Joseph Kage, national executive director of JIAS, said that the Jewish newcomers to the Dominion were part of a total of 112,606 persons who immigrated last year, stressing the fact that Canada is still “in a great measure, sustained by immigration.”

During the year, the annual report showed, 1,985 inquiries and requests for assistance regarding immigration matters were received by the JIAS; the social service department aided 1,897 newcomers; the documentation and naturalization service of the agency assisted 383 applicants for Canadian citizenship, preparing for them 724 various documents. At the same time, 526 CARE parcels were sent to Israel through JIAS in 1964. B. M. Bloomfield was elected president of the association, succeeding Joseph Ain.
