After City Controller William Dennison, Toronto’s acting mayor, presented a petition signed by 1,700 residents of the East End section of the city, protesting against the existence in that area of the headquarters of the Nazi Party, the City Council today voted to instruct the City Solicitor to probe the issue and report on whether there is anything the municipality can do legally in regard to that development.
Angry citizens in the East End have been besieging the Nazi headquarters since it opened two weeks ago, and have been demanding that it be closed down. Almost none of the residents of the section are Jewish. Alderman Joseph Piccinnini told the City Council today: “We must stop citizens from being aroused almost physically.” He advocated that the Council take some action to halt the Nazi use of their headquarters, seeking Federal action if necessary.
