Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, summoned last night Gen. Odd Bull, the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization commander, to inform him of the grave situation created by the Jordanian attack yesterday on Jerusalem in which two Israelis were killed and several wounded.
Premier Levi Eshkol postponed plans to reply last night to the debate in the Parliament on new appointments to the Cabinet and held instead urgent consultations with his staff on the shootings. The Liberal-Herut bloc in Parliament submitted an urgent motion for debate on the incident.
Official sources here stressed that the Jordanian shooting was planned. They noted that about 15 minutes before the attack, Jordan submitted a complaint to the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission claiming Israel had opened fire. They said the complaint was a pretext for the attack. The Israeli sources said that there was no shooting from Israel yesterday, not even a return fire to the Jordanian shooting.
They warned that if the Jordanian attack was King Hussein’s answer to Israeli warnings against “conniving” with raids into Israel by Fatah commandoes from Jordanian bases and to Israel’s care not to harm Jordanian civilians, “he is playing with fire.”
