The Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, made today its first allocations, totaling $900,000, after announcing it would operate in three principal areas. Those were educational, with emphasis on training teachers, rabbis and Jewish scholars; research in the history of European Jewish communities; and commemoration and documentation of the Nazi holocaust period.
The Foundation, which elected Dr. Nahum Goldmann as its first president last night, was established with residual funds from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. It will operate on an annual budget of $1,000,000. A provisional administrative committee, also announced last night, allocated the first grants.
In addition to Dr. Goldmann as president, the other officers are: Jacob Blaustein of Baltimore, senior vice-president; Moses Leavitt of New York, treasurer; Shad Polier of New York, secretary; and Mark Uveeler of New York, executive-director. Also serving on the executive committee are Gregorio Feingersch, Buenos Aires; Moshe Sharett, chairman of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem; Louis Pincus, treasurer of the Jewish Agency; Dr. Astorre Mayer of Milan, Italy; Dr. William Wexler of Savannah, Georgia; Israel Steff of London; and Rabbi Uri Miller of Baltimore.
