The Toronto City Council approved today a resolution urging the Canadian Parliament to deal with the Canadian Nazi party situation as “expeditiously as possible.” Two of the 23 Council members voted against the motion, asserting it would make martyrs of the neo-Nazis and set a precedent for political purposes, setting up a “padlock law.”
More than 3,000 persons have signed a petition asking for removal of the Nazi headquarters from an East End section. The petition was the basis for the action by the City Council. Mayor Philip Givens warned that sending the resolution back to committee would be “misunderstood” throughout Canada. John Beattie, self-styled leader of the newly announced Nazi party, said he would run for Parliament on a Nazi ticket.
