Chairman Michael A. Feighan of the House Immigration Subcommittee today blocked an Administration effort to obtain Subcommittee action on President Johnson’s bill to liberalize immigration policies.
The Ohio Democrat refused to permit Rep. Jack Brooks, Texas Democrat, to bring up the Administration bill at a Subcommittee meeting. Charges of delaying tactics were made against Rep. Feighan, who last week introduced his own bill which differed in several major aspects from the more liberal Administration bill. Rep. Brooks said he would seek action at the next meeting of the Subcommittee.
Before the Senate Immigration Subcommittee today, Sen. Joseph D. Tydings, Maryland Democrat, urged passage of the Administration bill to abolish the national origins quota system. He said “immigration on a non-discriminatory basis would enhance and invigorate our economy, our society and our culture.”
