Bernard L. Gottlieb, executive director of the Hartford Jewish Federation, arrived here today to conduct a survey of Jewish fund-raising and communal organizations in Melbourne and Sydney. His services also will be made available to the Victorian Jewish Board of Deputies.
He was named to the five-month assignment under joint sponsorship of the Joint Distribution Committee and the Federation of Australian Jewish Welfare Societies. In announcing the appointment, Charles H. Jordan, newly named executive head of the JDC, said in Geneva that the Australian community now numbers 67,000 Jews, of whom 80 percent are post-war refugees, mostly victims of Nazism from Eastern Europe. He said new Jewish migrants were coming to Australia at the rate of 6,000 to 7,000 per year.
Mr. Jordan pointed out also that the end of West German payments to the Conference on Material Claims Against Germany–which, with the JDC, helped support Jewish welfare and refugee services–had made it imperative for the Jewish community to raise the level of local fund collections.
