Braille Institute Aids Blind Youths in Preparation for Bar Mitzvah

To aid blind Jewish boys and girls in their preparation for Bar Mitzvan or Bat Mitzvan, the Jewish Braille Institute of America has published in Hebrew and English Braille the 67 Maftirs used throughout the year according to the specific date of the individual Bar Mitzvan ceremony, it was announced here today. The Institute will send any blind child the particular Braille Maftir required, free of charge.

Preparation of the necessary plates and the processing in quantities of these 67 Braille Maftirs was made possible through a gift from the Women’s branch of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. The organization is one of the three major supporters of the Jewish Braille Institute, the others being the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods and the National Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America. The master copy for each of the Braille Maftirs was transcribed by Mrs. Irving A. Weingart of Des Moines, Iowa, one of the world’s outstanding Hebrew brail lists.
