The United States Maccabiah team, consisting of 197 outstanding Jewish athletes, will leave for Tel Aviv this week to participate in the seventh World Maccabiah Games, from August 23-31, according to an announcement today by the United States Committee of Sports for Israel, sponsors of this country’s Maccabiah team.
The United States Team — the largest in history — includes several Olympic medal winners. The American-Jewish athletes will participate in 17 of the 20 sports on the program, competing against the top Jewish athletes of 30 countries. Max J. Lovell of New York City will be the U.S. team captain.
President Johnson today sent a message to the departing athletes, extending his personal greetings and congratulating the members of the U.S. Maccabiah team. The president stated, in part; “In an age of tension and friction at the international level, the opportunity for young people of all nationalities to meet in an atmosphere of friendly competition and shared hopes takes on increasing importance.”
