More than 800 rabbis of the three branches of American Judaism–Orthodox, Conservative and Reform–from 44 states, signed a proclamation today, calling upon “our fellow-Jews throughout the United States to identify themselves with the program of the Zionist Organization of America through membership enrollment, as a vital service to the progress of Israel and the future of our people.”

The proclamation, which was made public by Jacques Torczyner, ZOA president, emphasized that, while the State of Israel in its 18th year “has increased its strength,” it faces many problems in the areas of its security and economic growth.

Issued on the occasion of the approach of the New Year 5726, the call by the rabbis further underscored Israel’s contributions in the field of culture, science and technology, and pointed out that “the ‘old-new nation’ still struggling for full development of her own resources is already providing aid to underdeveloped countries.”
