R. Sargent Shriver, director of the U.S. Peace Gorps and of the Government’s anti-poverty program, was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of humane letter at an academic convocation hell here today by the Jewish Theological Seminary. It was the first convocation ever held here by the seminary, which marked its 80th anniversary with this event.

Rabbi Louis Finkelstein, chancellor of the seminary, who conferred the degree on Mr. Shriver, also awarded an honorary degree to Dr. Julius A. Stratton, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and bestowed the seminary’s 80th anniversary medal on Dr. Harry A. Wolfson, Nathan Littauer professor emeritus of Hebrew literature and philosophy at Harvard University. He lauded all three for the “high moral purpose” which motivated each of the recipients in his respective field of endeavor.
