Professor Dante Lattes, a noted Jewish scholar, author, journalist and educator, died here this weekend at the age of 89. He wrote a number of works on the history and philosophy of Zionism.
Born in Pitigliani, Italy, Dr. Lattes studied at the Rabbinical College in Leghorn and became an early devotee of Zionism to which he dedicated his life. He was lecturer at the Rome Rabbinical College. He served as secretary of the Zionist Federation and later as its honorary president.
His career in journalism began when he founded a Jewish periodical in Trieste which later merged with the weekly, Israel. He also founded and edited the monthly, Rassegna d’ Israel, one of the world’s top-level Jewish periodicals. During the Second World War, Dr. Lattes lived in Palestine. He returned to Italy in 1946.
Among his numerous works were “The Idea of Israel,” which has been translated into many languages; “The History of Zionism,” and a number of books on Bible commentary, literature, philosophy and history.
