With President Zalman Shazar and Tel Aviv’s Mayor Mordechai Namir extending the country’s and city’s official greetings, Histadrut opened its tenth convention here today. Aharon Becker, secretary-general of Histadrut, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the multi-faceted agenda facing the delegates.

Beginning tomorrow, reports and debates will be heard concerning trade union problems, the organizational structure of the central body as well as of its constituent trade unions, educational and cultural activities, Histadrut’s economic enterprises and the federation’s agricultural sector.

While the convention has not yet voted on a change of name for the organization, it is generally agreed that Histadrut will alter its official name from “General Federation of Jewish Laborers in Eretz Israel” to “General Federation of Laborers in Eretz Israel.” The change will stress the fact that Arab workers, as well as Jews, are now eligible for membership in the trade union constituting the Histadrut.
