The old prewar synagogue of the famous Rabbi of Chertkov, in the Tarnopol district of the Soviet Union, has been turned into a restaurant, while the huge grounds surrounding the hassidic rebbe’s former court is now an athletic field, it was reported here today by a traveler who had just returned from the USSR.

The report stated that there are only 30 Jewish families left now in Chertkov, which had been an important Jewish center prior to World War II. The rabbi’s synagogue according to the man who visited Chertkov, had been closed down as a house of worship a long time ago. A second former synagogue in the town is in a dilapidated condition, and is now used by the municipality as a warehouse.
