The University of Wisconsin announced here today that it has ordered the suspension from campus activities of a sorority, Kappa Delta, whose national president has refused to sign a pledge barring discrimination. The suspension is to go into effect in September, 1967, unless Kappa Delta submits a certificate on non-discrimination.
According to university authorities, the sorority’s national convention had adopted the pledge at its session last year, with 60 percent of the delegates favoring the non-discrimination clause. But Mrs. Frederick T. Morse, of Charlottesville, Va., president of Kappa Delta, has refused to sign the pledge, the university officials said, declaring the move unconstitutional.
The campus authorities said that the president of the local chapter did sign the pledge and that the local chapter is cooperating with the activities of the human rights committee here, formed by members of the faculty and representatives of the student body. In its report on the issue, the committee noted that the local Kappa Delta chapter has four members who are Jewish and one “pledge” who is Jewish.
