The executive committee of the Histadrut, Israel’s federation of labor, approved here today wage proposals made by the Mapai-Achdut alignment, calling for wage increases for all workers this year and next year. Under the proposal, previously accepted by the Histadrut trade union department, workers will receive increases ranging between 5 percent and 10 percent this year, with additional hikes of 5 percent in 1967.
Meanwhile workers in Haifa heard a stern warning today from a top leader of the Histadrut that continued pressure for wage increases had opened the “abyss of runaway prices” for all Israelis, Aharon Becker, Histadrut secretary-general, voiced the warning in an address on the Histadrut’s new wage policy to a plenary meeting of the Kaifa Labor Council. He said the policy was part of Israel’s effort to dampen inflation.
“The amount of wage increases should not be the decisive matter when the fate of the entire economic structure is at stake, ” he said,”Do you want the Histadrut to be popular for a few hours or to remain a responsible body dedicated to the preservation of the true interests of the workers and the State?,” he asked.
Mr.Becker, addressing earlier the national convention of the Countil of Working Women, described to the women delegates the need to combat price increases and wage boosts in Israel’s light on inflation.
