An invitation to George Rockwell, leader of the American Nazi Party, to speak at the Rockland Community College, at Spring Valley, N. Y. on February 25, was rescinded this weekend by a vote of student leaders of the college.
No reason for the students’ action was announced, but several students at the meeting warned of potential disorders as they reported on first-hand observations made at Columbia University last Wednesday night when Rockwell did not speak after having been arrested on an old disorderly conduct charge. Protests and threats had poured in to the college authorities and the student body in the last few days.
Rockwell was released in New York last Thursday evening in $100 bail and was ordered by Criminal Court Judge Hyman Skolniker to return for a hearing on March 10. He was defended in court by a Jewish attorney, Martin Berger, who acted on behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union which takes the attitude that Rockwell has a constitutional right to proclaim his anti-Jewish views. Mr. Berger was sharply criticized by other Jews when he left the court.
