Maurice Edelman told a meeting of the Anglo-Jewish Association today that he was giving up the presidency of the Association. He said he was doing so not only because of the “extreme pressure” of his work but also because he felt that the vitality of an organization such as the AJA was best insured by providing an opportunity for leadership to those who “served it diligently.”
Mr. Edelman, who is a member of Parliament, an attorney and a novelist and playwright, added that he knew of no one more suited to succeed him than Harold Sebag-Montefiore and he felt sure that the AJA Council would elect him unanimously at its next meeting. Mr. Sebag-Montefiore, a member of the AJA Council, is an Alderman of the County of London, an official of the Jewish Board of Guardians and a member of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
Discussing AJA activities, Mr. Edelman said the AJA had been instrumental in obtaining a collective approach by all Jewish organizations in Britain concerned with the plight of Soviet Jewry. He added that “we will not relax our efforts and we will continue to strive in the righteous fight to secure justice for our oppressed Soviet brethren. ” He concluded that he felt that the AJA has had a “vital and constructive role” to play in the life of the Anglo-Jewish community.
