Abie Nathan of Tel Aviv, Israel’s self-appointed peace emissary, arrived in Paris today with hopes of seeing President Charles de Gaulle and with plans to leave here Monday for New York for meetings with “several personalities for the same aim of peace. “
Nathan achieved overnight fame last month when he piloted an ancient plane to Port Said in a futile attempt to see Egyptian President Nasser in a bid to get Egyptian-Israeli peace talks started. Port Said officials gave him enough fuel to fly home.
Upon his arrival here today he said that only one man in Europe could play the role which Soviet Premier Kosygin had in arranging a truce between India and Pakistan at Soviet Tashkent. That man, he said, was General de Gaulle, who “is respected by the Arabs and the Jews” and who could gather “at the same table the Israeli and Arab Governments.”
