Eighty Haifa stevedores who staged a one day strike here yesterday, as a follow-up to a slow-down begun two weeks ago, returned to work today after Transport Minister Moshe Carmel and Mayor Abba Khoushi intervened in the labor dispute which, ship owners said, had tied up the port and had cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The 80 who went back to work are crane operators who accepted a plea from the Haifa Labor Council to ease the slow-down, which is still continuing. The dock workers are demanding higher pay for men with seniority and other better working conditions. The workers are doing their jobs at half-speed. Nearly 20 ships are tied up in the harbor.
