Israeli Cabinet Ministers and senior officials were reported today to be holding urgent talks on means of easing Israel’s unemployment problems. A number of Ministers have pledged Government measures for that goal.
Transport Minister Moshe Carmel said last night in Haifa that the Government intended to create more jobs but that such relief work must be “productive and useful.” He met with a delegation of workers from the Ilin and Auto car plants and assured them that the Government did not intend to approve setting up of an assembly plant for foreign cars.
Commerce and Industry Minister Baim Zadok met with Mayor Avner Garine of Ashdod, which is suffering from serious unemployment. Raanan Weitz, the head of the Jewish Agency settlement department, studied the possibilities of employing 400 residents in Negev development towns. Housing Minister Mordecai Bentov promised a delegation from the Kyriat Shmone Labor Council that 3,000,000 pounds ($1,000,000) will be spent on public building construction there.
