The Cabinet today requested the Knesset (Parliament) to select a committee of 19 of its members to study the entire structure of Israel’s elementary and higher education system. The Cabinet asked the Knesset to coopt for that committee also four representatives from Israeli teachers’ organizations, and to complete a report by March, 1967.

The step was taken by the Cabinet because organizations of teachers had protested against recommendations by another committee, headed by Prof. Y. Praver, which has proposed that high schools enroll students after only six years of elementary schooling. At present, high schools do not accept students until they have completed eight years of elementary work.
