A war crimes trial expected to last nine months started here today against Fritz Hildebrand, a former high officer in Hitler’s SS. Hildebrand, who is 63, is charged with participating in the individual murders of 15 Jews, and in aiding six mass killings of Jews, during World War II, in Galicia and Poland. Witnesses against Hildebrand have been brought here from various parts of the world. The prosecutor said that the costs of the trial are expected to reach 500, 000 Deutschmarks ($125, 000).
Meanwhile, the international congress of the European Assembly of Persecutees of Nazism, meeting in Frankfurt, requested the German Government to expedite investigations into Nazi war crimes. The congress also adopted a resolution criticizing the German Government for the manner and pace in awarding indemnification to victims of Nazism.
