A high-ranking official of Israel’s intelligence services — who can not be identified either by name or rank — resigned here today. This resignation follows yesterday’s announcement by Isser Harel, special Securtiy adviser to Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, that he has quit his post.
Several members of the security and foreign affairs committee of Israel’s Knesset (Parliament) said today they will investigate Mr. Harel’s resignation and will request him to testify and state the reasons for his exit. He was reported to have quit due to disagreements about his prerogatives in the security job.
Mr. Harel’s name and rank, like those of the person who quit today, were a highly-confidential secret during the years he held the job of chief of Israel’s intelligence and counter-intelligence service.
