The Lyon Cables Society announced that it had ordered construction of a cable between France and Israel which is scheduled to be in operation in two years. It will be Israel’s only operating cable connection with other countries.
The contract is valued at 80, 000, 000 francs ($16, 000, 000) and the cable will have the same specifications as the one now connecting France and the United States, the company said. The Western Electric Company of New York has already contracted for 25 percent of the cable’s facilities and Post and Telegraph companies of West Germany, Switzerland and Holland have started negotiations for use of the projected cable.
