Leaders of New York’s Jewish community expressed deep concern at the pattern of continued harassments and arrests of Soviet Jews and called upon Secretary General U Thant to “intervene” and send a team of impartial experts to study the problem.
At a meeting attended by 500 Jewish leaders of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, plans to mobilize Jewish religious and secular organizations on behalf of Soviet Jews were outlined. Speakers included Mayor John V. Lindsay.
At the meeting, Harry K, Gutmann, president of the Jewish Council, representing ten major Jewish agencies, read to the gathering a communication sent to United Nations Secretary General U Thant urging him on behalf of New York City’s 2,750,000 Jews to “consider sending a team of impartial experts to fully determine the facts concerning the Jewish problem in the U.S.S.R.”
