President Johnson today told a press conference that he has instructed Ellsworth Bunker, new U.S. Ambassador-at-Large, to review proposals for a nuclear desalination project in Israel. He said he hoped for a “substantial breakthrough” on the problem of desalting during his administration.

Following a favorable feasible prognosis several months ago, the Israeli-American cooperative plan remained dormant. The President’s announcement today indicates that a new look will be taken at proposals and the question of financing. The President described desalination as a prospect that “holds so much hope for mankind.”
