For the second day in succession, a scheduled session of the Security Council, to continue consideration of Israel’s current grievance against Syria, in connection with the recent spate of terrorist incursion into Israel under the encouragement of the Damascus Government, was postponed today. The United Nations announced officially that the Council will meet tomorrow morning.
The issue has been on the Security Council’s agenda for more than two weeks. A meeting was to have been held yesterday, but was postponed because, as yet, there had been no resolution prepared to lay before the 15-member body. It was felt the issue could be resolved only by a resolution, even if it is one that might face a Soviet veto.
Yesterday, the delayed session was re-scheduled for today, while a draft resolution was being prepared by the United States and British delegations. The draft would have mentioned Syria by name, would have adopted the Israeli thesis to the effect that Syria’s Government was responsible for the El Fatah raids into Israel, and would have called on Damascus to prevent such raids in the future.
Today’s further delay, it was believed, was due to the fact that the U.S.A. and Britain could not line up sufficient backing even for a relatively mild draft that would have avoided outright condemnation of Syria.
