Treasury sources said here today that the draft budget for the fiscal year starting April 1, 1967, will probably provide indications as to the progress of the country’s current austerity program. The budget will be submitted to Parliament next Tuesday by Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir.
The budget, which serves as an overall blueprint for Israel’s economy, is meant to be the first indicator of the nation’s recuperation from the present economic slowdown, the sources said. It will contain forecasts of progress toward defined economic targets, they added. The goals of the austerity program include a shift of production toward export industries, greater worker productivity, stable wages and prices, and cuts in domestic consumption.
