Press, Leaders Tell Mayor Who Sponsored Jew-baiter to Resign

Newspapers in this area today had given strong editorial support to demands by political leaders that Mayor J.H. Belows of nearby Assiniboia resign or apologize for having lent his sponsorship to a meeting featuring a speaker described by the Canadian Jewish Congress as a promoter of “hate propaganda and racism.”

Belows had presided at a meeting which presented a tape-recorded message from Ron Gostick, publisher of the “Canadian Intelligence Service.” According to the Canadian Jewish Congress, Gostick has accused the Jewish people of being “warmongers, Christ-killers, revolutionaries, Communists and international bankers.” Mayor Belows, however, faced with demands for his resignation from members of his own town council, insisted that Gostick was not an anti-Semite. Jewish leaders and Winnipeg Jewish newspapers strongly criticized the mayor’s stand.

The Winnipeg Free Press, leading Manitoba daily, said that Mayor Belows had the choice of resigning or recanting.
