Birobidzhaner Shtern (Birobidjan Star), the only Yiddish-language newspaper in the Soviet Union, has expanded its circulation from 1,000 to 12,000, it was reported here today from Moscow.
The 12-fold circulation increase was disclosed in the annual statistical manual, “The Press in the USSR in 1965.” The manual listed the circulation figure of 12,000 in a table on the newspapers published in various languages of Soviet ethnic groups. The Shtern is a single-page newspaper appearing three times a week. It is published in the so-called Jewish Autonomous Region of eastern Siberia, long promoted, during the Stalin era, as a Soviet triumph in the handling of its Jewish minority.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
