The American Jewish Committee’s Community Service, which carries on Jewish educational and cultural programs, has been expanded in Brazil in response to requests for assistance from Brazilian Jewish communities, it was reported here today.
According to a report from the AJC’s Latin American Office, programs were launched in cooperation with Jewish leaders in three such communities. In Belo Horizonte 600 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, a series of audio-visual programs consisting of film-strips with lectures on Judaica were shown. The programs were given in Jewish schools and the local B’nai B’rith lodge.
A similar program was presented during a three-day series in Recife, in Brazil’s northeast, home of one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Western hemisphere. “Every Jewish child in Recife was involved through his Hebrew school, and most of the other members of the community attended the presentations at the Jewish Center and B’nai B’rith headquarters,” the report said. In Salvador, on the northeast coast of Brazil, the program was repeated with equal success.
