The organization of Jews who had been deported by the Nazis from France to Nazi camps sent out two new appeals today to thousands of French Jews, urging support of candidates backed by President de Gaulle who did not win clear majorities in the first round of voting in the French Parliamentary elections last Sunday. The runoff elections will be held next Sunday. The coordinating committee represents thousands of such survivors of Nazism in France.
One of the appeals was addressed to Jews in the Seventh Paris district, where French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville is a candidate against Frederic Dupont, of the Democratic Center Party. The appeal specifically urged Jews to vote for the Foreign Minister next Sunday because of his friendship for Israel and his declaration on behalf of emigration of Soviet Jews to rejoin families split by the Nazi holocaust. The appeal said “choose Couve de Murville for France, for Israel and for the peace.”
The second appeal dealt with the many Communist candidates who collected enough votes to take part in the runoff election. The appeal urged Jewish voters to vote against the Communist candidates because “they encourage the Arab countries to fight against Israel” and because “they never did anything to fight against discrimination against Jews in the Soviet Union.”
