The introduction of an amendment to the statewide Humane Slaughter Law in the State Legislature was condemned here today as “aimed at eliminating ritual slaughter in Ohio.”
A.M. Braun, chairman of the Kashruth Board of the Kashruth Board of the Cleveland Jewish Federation, said that the amendment which would require that the products of ritual slaughter be “specifically marketed as such,” will “definitely bring to an end ritual slaughtering, which the Legislature of Ohio so recently declared ‘humane.'”
Noting that rabbinic law banned the eating of hindquarters of all animals — even those ritually slaughtered — Mr. Braun said that the amendment would bar all commercial use of such hindquarters which are now sold as non-kosher. “The imposition of such restrictions upon the marketing and sale of ritually slaughtered meat will definitely bring to an end ritual slaughtering,” Mr. Braun declared.
The amendment was introduced in the Ohio Legislature by State Representative Ronald M. Mottl of Parma, The Humane Slaughter Law itself, which specifically describes shechita as “humane, ” goes into effect July 1, 1967, Mr. Braun warned that similar amendments have been introduced in 19 states on behalf of a national organization called Friends of Animals, Inc., which has been engaged in a legislative program which, if successful, “could have the effect of doing away with kosher meat slaughtering.”
